Recycle Rice Eccles

Typically held date/time: Events are typically held during the home tailgates for football games. Volunteers meet 2.5 hours before kick-off.

Description: Recycle Rice-Eccles is an initiative by the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) sustainability board to promote community engagement through recycling. Volunteers walk around the main tailgate lot collecting recycling from Ute fans and connecting with them. This initiative increases the University’s diversion rate with the more volunteers we have each week.

How to get involved? Who can participate?: To get involved, keep an eye out in the fall for the ASUU marketing around campus. There will be a link where you can sign up to participate. Anyone can participate if they are 18 or older.

What Goes Around Comes Around

Typically held date/time: Volunteers are needed during residence hall move-out in May and again in August to sort and prepare items for the pop-up thrift shop.

Description: When students move out of their residence halls at the end of the year, they donate gently used items like linens, bathroom and kitchen supplies, clothing, and unopened food stuffs. We keep all these items out of landfill by donating food to the Feed U Pantry and redistributing everything else to students in a free pop-up thrift shop at the beginning of the semester. The program, fondly known as What Goes Around Comes Around, or “WGACA,” helps meet students’ basic needs, promotes a circular economy, and moves toward a zero-waste campus.

How to get involved? Who can participate?: Anyone can participate, including staff, faculty and students. The labor of collecting, weighing and sorting donations takes many hands. Please contact sustainability@utah.edu to find out what our needs are and how you can help! Most of this work occurs in early May during the move-out period and in mid August before classes begin.
